Ask your MP for clean cars for carers

We’ve worked with The Care Workers’ Charity and New AutoMotive to propose a scheme to get electric cars into the hands of the people who need them the most: care workers in rural areas, often driving over 1,000 miles a month to deliver vital services, hammered by fuel costs, while producing significant carbon emissions.

A scheme to help care workers get electric cars could cut their bills by £1,000 a year, while having an outsized impact on bringing down the UK’s transport emissions. It’s a win-win-win-win for Net Zero, the social care sector, the economy and public health.

Right now though, most electric cars are being bought by wealthy drivers purchasing luxury electric SUVs - but it’s people on lower household incomes who would benefit the most from the savings that come with the switch to electric cars.

France has already done this, by bringing in a scheme to help people who need to drive more than 8,000 miles/year for work, and who are below a set income threshold, rent electric cars from the government for just €100 a month, including all insurance and maintenance costs. This can be a financial lifeline for people on lower incomes, and it decarbonises the vehicles that need cleaning up the most. The scheme’s been incredibly popular - we need one in the UK!
